"Auguries of Innocence" William Blake

Joy and woe are woven fine,
A clothing for the soul divine.
Under every grief and pine
Runs a joy with silken twine

1.) This stanza means that sadness and happiness often go hand in hand. You don't get one without the other. But it's not necessarily a bad thing. Because with every bad moment there is a joyous moment not far behind.

2.) One obvious literary device Blake uses is metaphor. He uses pine and silken twine to describe grief as well as joy. He also describes these feelilngs as clothing, something which is necessary for life. He also uses the word "Woven" which further compares these emotions to clothing.

  1. Good work, Sunnee! Why do you think Blake uses the extended metaphor of fabric/thread in this stanza?
